Prof Peter Tornquist

Dean

Prof Peter Tornquist is an accomplished composer and educator with a diverse background in music theory, electronic music, and improvisation. His major works have been performed by orchestras around the world, and he has contributed extensively to the development of artistic research in Norway through his theories and methods on interaction between composers and performers.

As an academic, he has taught and researched composition, electronic music, improvisation, and phenomenological approaches to music analysis. He also has a strong background in politics, having served as the president of Ny Musikk (ISCM), vice chairman of the Norwegian Composer’s Association and of TONO (Norwegian Performing Rights Society), and as a successful candidate in Norwegian local elections.

Currently, he is the Dean of Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at the National University of Singapore, where he continues to contribute to the development of higher music education through strategic partnerships. Peter Tornquist has received Honorary Fellowships from Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal Northern College of Music in recognition of his services to music.
