Overview

The Master of Music (MMus) is a two-year full-time programme designed for those who have just completed a qualifying Bachelor of Music or appropriate university-level studies (in Singapore or overseas) and wish to advance their professional studies in music at YST.

YST’s MMus programme seeks to promote higher-level music study in the individual’s Major area, develop instrument-specific as well as group pedagogy capacities that are relevant in Singaporean and international music education communities, and facilitate professional learning that is needed for success in the music industry.

Students emerge with strong competence in their Major area and deeper knowledge of music interpretation, experience in high-level ensemble involvement (often in leadership roles), theoretical and applied understanding in pedagogy and workshop leadership, and greater communication and professional abilities across a variety of contexts.

Programme Structure

Duration of Programme (Full-Time Only)

Alongside focusing on their Major area, students develop broader capabilities through taking courses in the Analysis & Composition, Contextual Studies or Professional Integration areas (in which they complete a minimum of six modules of coursework). They are encouraged to design their own study programmes in line with their professional activities and aspirations.

Students who have completed either the BMus at YST or an approved Bachelor of Music at an accredited institution of higher education; and who have completed their undergraduate degree with a Cumulative Average Point (CAP) or equivalent of 3.5 or higher, may be credited up to 20 MCs towards the first semester of the MMus degree. These students will be required to complete 60 MCs in approved modules over three semesters, successfully perform all juries and recitals, and maintain a minimum CAP of 3.0 in their MMus degree.

Major specialisations are offered in Brass, Composition, Conducting, Piano, Strings, and Woodwinds. Please note that Audio Arts & Sciences, Music & Society, Music, Collaboration & Production and Voice are not offered under the MMus programme.

Full-time: 4 semesters#

#Subject to approval, graduates from the BMus degree programme at YST may transfer credits from the undergraduate degree to the MMus programme, shortening the duration of candidature to 3 semesters.

There is one intake each year following the same application conditions and schedule as the BMus application. Visit HERE for more information on how to apply!
