PROGRAMMES

Electives, Minor & Second Major

We believe in the importance of creating multiple pathways and entry points for musical exposure and engagement. For us as a primarily undergraduate-focused institution, this is reflected in the different tiers of opportunity for involvement that we offer to NUS students.

Music Electives

Every academic year, we offer a number of Music courses as electives open to students from all faculties. These courses span General Education, analysis and composition, sound and music computing, contextual studies, language study, as well as applied courses in world music, keyboard studies, music cognition and jazz.

Minor in Music & Society

Offered exclusively for NUS non-Music majors, the Minor in Music & Society is intended as a capstone that extends musical exposure with a consideration of music in social, political, economic and aesthetic contexts. For those interested in developing deeper capabilities in a specific area, do explore the Second Major section below.

Second Major

NUS students have the opportunity to apply and audition to pursue a Second Major in Instrumental* Performance, Voice, Composition, Audio Arts & Sciences (AAS), Music & Society (MS), or Music, Collaboration & Production (MCP) alongside their primary Major.

(*Instrumental majors include Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Percussion, Harp, and Piano)

Second Major in Instrumental Performance / Voice / Composition
For the Second Major in these fields, the process begins with Access to Major Study, where students with passion and capability are given access to read foundational level area study courses, comprising one-to-one lessons and studio classes, for two semesters.

Upon satisfactory completion of all required courses for Access to Major Study, students can then apply for and continue in the Second Major in Instrumental Performance / Voice / Composition

Second Major in AAS / MS / MCP
Students who are keen on one of these pathways can apply and audition directly for admission to the Second Major in AAS / MS / MCP without needing to have completed one year of Access to Major Study.
