GEC1035: Patrons of the Arts (4 Units)

Course instructor:
Assoc Prof Greg Petersen

Course Schedule: Mondays, 10am–12pm (Semester 2, AY2023/24)

*Additional dates may be involved for projects/assessments during the semester period of 15 Jan – 11 May 2024. Added make-up classes may also be scheduled due to public holidays coinciding with class dates.

Objectives
Music teachers, activists, advocates, and movers and shakers of the arts community often seek greater understanding of the motivation behind giving to the arts. The course is a conceptual and practical introduction to the complex networks that drive arts “patronage,” including multifarious kinds of patronage. Issues raised and debated include exploring money, religion, politics, social classes, and many other social constructs that influence what art people support, and why they, especially you, support different kinds of art. Critical thinking and expression skills will be developed through written assessments, classroom discussions, and contributions to blog postings related to the course materials.

Content
The course encourages innovation in seeking funding, deepens learners’ knowledge about patrons in the arts and improving productivity in relation with finding the right patrons and ensuring financial aspects of projects are manageable.

Registration opens on 28 September 2023 and closes on 5 November 2023.
