MUA5264 Musical Engagement in the Community (4 Units)

Course Schedule: Tuesdays, 7pm-9pm (Semester 1, AY2024/25)

*Additional dates may be involved for projects/assessments during the semester period of 12 Aug – 7 Dec 2024. Added make-up classes may also be scheduled due to public holidays coinciding with class dates.

Objectives

Through this course, learners will critically reflect on their role as an artist in the community to be agents of change, particularly in the area of health promotion and education, while gaining theoretical insights into the relevant aspects of community music-making and its practical implications. They will further hone leadership, group dynamics facilitation, coaching and mentoring skills. With a better understanding of the applications within different contexts in community music-making, learners can be more informed when it comes to working with stakeholders across disciplines.

Content

In today’s rapidly evolving society, there are opportunities to encourage positive social change through musical engagement. This course introduces current thinking and best practices in community music-making through research and information synthesis, examples that feature dynamic interplay between the different contexts where community music intersects with pedagogical processes. The course also includes practical hands-on application of facilitative and explorative skills including community health promotion.

*Requires at least 5 years of performing/teaching experience in music, AND/OR successful outcome of the selection interview.
