MUH5202 Music in Interconnection (4 Units)

Course instructor:
Dr Frances Lee

Course Schedule: Mondays, 7–9pm (Semester 2, AY2023/24)

*Additional dates may be involved for projects/assessments during the semester period of 15 Jan – 11 May 2024. Added make-up classes may also be scheduled due to public holidays coinciding with class dates.

Objectives

Through this course, learners will critically consider both contemporary and historical case studies that are presented through various mediums (e.g., academic essays, newspaper articles, and social media), including evaluating and making inferences using trends evaluation and application. Learners will examine and assess connections between music and other domains on both practical and abstract levels, thereby developing a multidisciplinary awareness and building an understanding of collaborative practices with stakeholders across disciplines. They will extrapolate these connections to the wider world around them and gain a more multifaceted understanding of the role of music. They will also exercise and advance their skills in research design, research and information synthesis, storytelling through various assignments. Learners are encouraged to apply the new perspectives gained in this course to their individual practice, as relevant to their own artistic and professional identity.

Content

This course explores music as a locus of interaction: how it is situated in and relates to the wider world outside the concert hall, both in the abstract and in the real world. Music, like any other discipline, has both intrinsic and extrinsic connections to other fields, and adopting a multidisciplinary approach to music can lead to exciting and impactful results. Through both contemporary and historical case studies, each week of this course will critically consider the interconnection between music and another field, including areas within the arts (e.g., theatre and visual art) and without (e.g., nature, gender studies, and politics) through understanding concepts of collaborative practices with stakeholders across disciplines.

*Recommended to have language and literacy proficiency equivalent to 2 years of tertiary-level education conducted in English, at least 5 years of work experience, AND/OR successful outcome of the selection interview.
