Prof Peter Tornquist

Dean

Peter Tornquist is Dean of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at the National University of Singapore, working to advance its strategy as a dynamic higher music education institution centred in Asia and impacting the world.

Peter contributes to the development of higher music education through an extensive network of strategic national and international partnerships. He is a long-time collaborator with the Association of European Conservatoires and MusiQuE, founding member of the International Benchmarking Group, Vice President of the Southeast Asian Directors of Music Executive Council, and a member of the Singapore Symphony Group Board of Directors.

From 2013 to 2021, Peter was Principal of the Norwegian Academy of Music, where he strengthened the Academy’s international profile, helped position it as one of the world’s highest-ranked institutions in the performing arts, and established its PhD Programme in Artistic Research. He was awarded Honorary Fellowships by the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal Northern College of Music in recognition of his services to music.

Peter grew up in Sweden, Switzerland and Brazil, settling in Norway for composition studies with Lasse Thoresen and concluding his education at the Royal College of Music in London with George Benjamin. His artistic work spans the fields of composition, electronic music, improvisation and music theory. He has had major compositions performed by ensembles such as the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and the London Sinfonietta.
