Greg joined the Conservatory in its foundational years after a search for someone with a doctorate in interdisciplinary and professional music experience. One of the first questions the Conservatory posed to him was, “Other than knowing how to play well, what else does a musician really need to know to be successful in the 21st century?” Since that first question, Greg has developed eighteen disparate courses for the Conservatory, each helping the students develop foundational skills, keep them abreast of changes and help them be successful in the future.
Two questions underlie almost all his university work: 1) Why do humans create art? 2) What is the impact of any art created, and why? These questions started in his youth and continued to resonate while he attained a bachelor’s degree in double bass performance, an inter-disciplinary Master of Arts degree, and a doctorate in “Humanistic Studies,” and they continue to resonate today in his research and teaching. These questions have led to publications on a wide variety of topics and have also helped students understand how the arts impact society and them individually.
Because of his diverse talent and abilities, Greg has been seconded to other NUS institutions most of his time here at NUS, including more than eight years in the College of Alice & Petersen Tan (CAPT) and three years as the Master of Ridge View Residential College (RVRC).
Prior to dedicating himself to higher education, Greg was a professional bassist. He performed on numerous commercial projects, including Walt Disney Pictures and Warner Bros. film scores. He also performed live with several international celebrities, Broadway musicals, ice shows, and similar events. Professional opera, ballet, and symphonic organizations encapsulate his classical music experience.
