ABOUT ZHU MU
Vibrant young cellist Zhu Mu has performed globally as a soloist and chamber musician. He has been featured as an artist in countries such as China, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, and United States. Zhu Mu was the winner of the Central Conservatory of Music Cello Competition in Beijing, the 4th China National Duo Cello Competition, and prizewinner of the 2006 Bayreuther International Music Competition in Germany.
An active chamber musician, Zhu Mu not only performs traditional repertoire but is active in the contemporary music scene performing works by leading Chinese and Pan-Asian composers. Zhu Mu has performed in various new music concert series held in South Korea, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong, featuring works by renowned composers such as 2011 Pulitzer Prize winner Zhou Long, Chen Yi, Ye Xiaogang, Daron Aric Hagen and Gilda Lyons, to name a few. He is cellist in the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, the Beijing New Music Ensemble, a frequent participant of the Beijing Modern Festival and the “211” Recording Project, a government-funded series to promote new compositions.
Outstanding not only in solo and chamber performance, Zhu Mu takes his professionalism into the orchestral world. As a principal cellist, Zhu Mu has worked with orchestras such as the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra (Japan), Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival Orchestra (Germany), Berlin Hochschule für Musik Symphony Orchestra, and China Youth Symphony Orchestra. Frequently invited to perform in top-notch music festival orchestras, Zhu Mu was specifically selected by Maestro Charles Dutoit to participate in the Pacific Music Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, and the Asian Youth Orchestra in their world tours. Zhu Mu has toured the world with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Sweden Camerata Nordica, the Strait Philharmonic Orchestra, and the 2010 Asia-Pacific Orchestra co-organised by the United Nations Headquarters and conducted by Tan Dun and Lu Jia. In addition, he has performed under the the baton of C. Eschenbach, V. Gergiev, Seiji Ozawa, C. Dutoit, K. Masur and L. Maazel.
In 2011, Zhu Mu was named by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission as an Emerging Oustanding Young Teacher. Currently, Zhu Mu is on the Cello Faculty at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and Head of Cello Department at the middle school of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. In addition, Zhu Mu has been invited to give masterclasses such as TCU Cello Festival (USA) and Xinghai Conservatory of Music (China).
Zhu Mu received his Undergraduate Degree with honours from Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music (China), Masters of Music from Berlin’s Hochschule für Musik (Germany), and in 2010 he graduated with a PhD with honours from the Hochschule für Musik in Dresden.
He has also received cello pedagogy masterclass training from M. Rostropovich, M. Maisky, and B. Greenhouse. His mentors include Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Stephan Forck, Song Tao, and Huguo Yao.
