ABOUT THIS EVENT
The duo „les éclats du son“ was founded in 2002 by pianist Sebastian Voltz and percussionist
Max Riefer. Initially conceptualized as a duo, the ensemble grew to an octet over the years. Many
of the first projects were actualized in cooperation with the public radio station Saarland
Broadcasting Saarbrücken, notably a portrait concert of British composer James Clarke in 2006
and a concert dedicated to Claude Vivier’s 60s birthday in 2008. First international performances
followed at festivals such as „Two days and two nights of new music“ in Odessa (Ukraine) or the
„Soundways Festival“ in St. Petersburg (Russia). During this first period, the ensemble worked
closely together with composers such as Dieter Mack, Karmella Tsepkolenko, Theo Brandmüller,
Bernhard Wulff, and Thomas Lauck. In 2010, the ensemble members decided to pursue their own
musical projects with Voltz venturing out to European Modern Jazz and Riefer moving to
Southeast Asia and focusing on the region’s modes of practice which put „les éclats du son“ on
hold.
After a 12-year long hiatus, the two founding members chose to revive the initial duo by
combining their personal musical experiences from the last decade and subsequently celebrated
their come back in 2022 with a concert and live broadcast with focus on new music in Southeast
Asia at Saarland Broadcasting Saarbrücken. Currently, they work on a new program with works by
Peter I. Edwards (SIN/USA), Dieter Mack (GER), I Wayan Sudirana (IDN) , Joey Tan (SIN) and
Katharina Roth (GER). With this program, they will go on a concert tour to Southeast Asia and
produce a CD in 2024.
