ABOUT THIS EVENT

In this lecture, Professor Tawaststjerna will speak about Sibelius’s life, its historical context, and the composer’s stylistic development. Each of Sibelius’ symphonies and his violin concerto will be discussed, and recorded excerpts from these works will be played. Parallel to this presentation, the most important piano works of Sibelius will be introduced with the help of recordings or at the piano. This way, the listener will be offered a broad view of Sibelius’s life and his major orchestral and piano works.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Erik Tawaststjerna is Professor Emeritus at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. Mr. Tawaststjerna won the second prize at the Helsinki Maj Lind national piano competition in 1968 and has since given concerts around the world. He has made numerous recordings, among them a series of 8 recordings of the complete piano music by Jean Sibelius on the BIS label. He has been teaching at the Sibelius Academysince 1982, where he was appointed full professor of piano in 1986. He has given master classes, among other places, at the Guildhall School of Music in London, University of the Arts in Berlin, Tokyo College of Music, and at the Vienna University for Music. He was named “Professor of the Year” in 2006 by the Finnish Professors’ League.
