Chamber Music Week: Opening Gala – The Gabrieli Project

March 16, 2025 3:00pm

Conservatory Concert Hall
Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, 3 Conservatory Drive
The Chamber Music Week Opening Gala – The Gabrieli Project, directed by Artistic Director Alan Choo, features YST students alongside members of YST Ensemble-in-Residence Red Dot Baroque in the grand polychoral music from 17th-century San Marco Cathedral in Venice. Composers such as Giovanni Gabrieli, Francesco Cavalli and Biagio Marini celebrated the unique architecture of the Cathedral and its many balconies by writing music for multiple instrumental choirs, each to be performed from different balconies and locations.

In the context of 21st Century YST Conservatory, the similarly unique structure of the YST building will be utilized to bring out the call-and-response and echo effects of the music. Audiences travel together with the musicians to experience the music in multiple stations in the building, culminating in the epic Canzon for 22 parts in 5 instrumental choirs, by Giovanni Gabrieli in the concert hall. An exciting immersive experience not to be missed!

The Chamber Music Week Opening Gala is supported by the Shaw Foundation Ones to Watch series.
