ABOUT THIS EVENT
SUITE ENSEMBLE, a musical suite in six movements
Inspired by the Fashion and Textiles exhibits at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM), musicians from YST’s ‘Text and Music’ class have created six unique movements each connecting to a particular artefact or a piece of history or culture. Curated by Dr. Chen Zhangyi and Dr. Sara Florian, this project would be interwoven by animation designed by YST alumni Stephanie Tan, as well as a new poem by Dr. Florian.
The first pair of movements juxtaposes the differences between matriarchal and patriarchal societies through the inspiration of the Peranakan Kebaya and Manchurian costumes, evoking colourful and disparate musical sound worlds. In the third movement of ‘Bound Feet’, a string quintet explores the contrasting perspectives of male and female on the Lotus shoes. In the fourth movement, a narrative soundscape is reimagined based on the Amulet Keris, which has Filipino and Indonesian origins. Finally, the last pair of movements pay homage to the Qipao/Cheongsam through song, expressing the transformation and liberation of the modern woman.
