Audio Arts & Sciences
The Audio Arts & Sciences (AAS) area provides holistic and applied training that builds students’ capabilities as audio engineers, music producers, sound designers and acousticians, who possess technical expertise as well as sophisticated musical knowledge. Students gain valuable experience working in YST’s vibrant calendar of events across the year, as well as recording projects ranging from jazz, rock and pop to orchestral repertoire. Course offerings in community engagement and musical leadership further prepare them to create impact within and beyond the studio.
AAS students further attend seminars led by industry professionals, who share on their personal insights as well as applied methodologies. Recent professionals that our students have worked with include local recording engineers and producers as well as international specialists from companies such as Take5 Music Production, MSM Productions and professors from our institutional partners.
More broadly, being situated in the Singapore music landscape, AAS students build close connections with the surrounding local, regional and international ecosystem.
Students benefit from working in the Conservatory Recording Studio, which features a 48 input SSL C200 digital console, TC6000, ProTools Ultimate, and a rich microphone collection. It is linked to the Conservatory Concert Hall, Steven Baxter Recital Studio and Orchestral Hall, and uses the latest studio diffusion technology which makes it extremely ideal for both classical and modern music production. Our newly-installed Dolby-certified Atmos Studio, featuring a 9.1.4 monitoring system with ProTools Ultimate software and Dolby Atmos RMU hardware at its heart, is the first studio of its kind in an educational institution in Singapore.
Programme Structure
Students receive structured training that builds their knowledge and capabilities in areas such as music production and recording, critical listening, acoustics, live sound reinforcement and audio for media. In their fourth year, they bring their learning to new applied settings, completing industry internships.
Beyond their major, AAS students take classes in the areas of analysis and composition, contextual studies, professional integration, and general education (under NUS). Further electives, such as in music production and marketing as well as advanced techniques, provide platforms for realising artistic identities.
NUS students may also apply to pursue the Second Major in AAS in Year 1 Semester 2 to commence their studies from Year 2. Interested applicants should apply via myEduRec during the application period for restricted minors and second majors (Semester 2 only). Home faculty permission must always be sought first before enrolling for these classes. Prospective students are responsible for consulting with their home faculty’s Dean’s Office for approval.
Entry Requirements
At YST, our student selection criteria evaluates a range of factors in an application portfolio, including the candidate’s intellectual aptitude, curiosity, energy, artistic drive, relationship with people, linguistic proficiency and personal qualities that will contribute value to the cohort.
In addition to seeking the best emerging musical talents locally and in the region, our audition process is tailored to discover aspiring applicants with potential for developing a viable future professional and artistic identity.
Beyond evident current capacity in the applicant’s Major field, we explore how our programme resonates with them.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Live auditions in Singapore and some overseas locations take place from the immediately-preceding December to February period. View our admissions and academic timeline here.
Candidates are required to perform at least 10 minutes of repertoire consisting of at least two contrasting pieces, movements from compositions, or songs of their own choice using any musical instruments. Any style, genre, or period is permissible.
Candidates with a background in composition may also choose to present a portfolio of at least two original scores written for different combinations of instruments/voices (e.g. piano trios, string quartets, large ensembles, etc.). Those with past experience in recording work are welcome to present a portfolio of their pre-recorded projects.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate aptitude and ability in musical concepts and materials.
