KARST DE JONG, piano
ABOUT THE EVENT
Karst de Jong, Visiting Professor at YST for Semester 1 of the 2019/20 academic year, will play a solo piano recital with improvisations inspired by various musical styles and influences. As the audience, you get to suggest themes or ideas as the basis for some of these improvisations! He will also share some reflections about improvisation – its tradition in classical music, jazz and other styles; its pedagogical applications in higher music education; and its meaning and place in the music we make today. Join us again in November for a special collaborative workshop with members of the YST community!
ABOUT THE ARTIST
As part of ongoing international collaborations, we are delighted to welcome Karst de Jong as Visiting Professor for Semester 1 of the 2019/20 academic year. Karst is a professor of improvisation and composition techniques at the Royal Conservatory The Hague and the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya in Barcelona.
Active as a performing musician, theoretician, improvisor and teacher, Karst seeks to give improvisation a place in the daily life of contemporary classical musicians, and has facilitated creative workshops at YST in the past several years. This season, join us in witnessing the inspiration he brings to our students, and experience it for yourself!
