ABOUT THE EVENT
Of One Cloth – Lieder of Johannes Brahms and Hugo Wolf – Seamless Fusion of Words and Music
Johannes Brahms and Hugo Wolf both loved German lyric poetry and each composed a great many Lieder. Brahms’ more conservative approach can be seen as a continuation of the great tradition of the Lieder of Schubert and Schumann. Hugo Wolf’s songs, in contrast, are considered to be more progressive and demonstrate the influences of Wagner (whose music he admired) while also maintaining a deep connection to the more traditional approach. This performance explores connections and comparisons across the two.
