ABOUT THIS EVENT

Crossings by Adeline Wong
Looking forward from Bach through the lens of today’s composers

The Goldberg Variations form a cornerstone of keyboard repertoire and has become an iconic monument in Western music. One can simply enjoy and admire it as a beautiful keyboard work, and on another level, it’s a Rubik’s Cube of invention and architecture.

In this presentation I will be discussing on how the Goldberg (written almost three centuries ago) has been reimagined, reinterpreted by today’s composers, culminating in my own response towards the Goldberg, in my piano work Crossingscomposed in 2020. Crossings, as the title implies, is a display of hand crossings driven by the more virtuosic and arabesque-like variations evident in the Goldberg. The hand crossings are often decorated with trills and other ornamentations drawn from Goldbergs Aria. The 6-minute Crossings is almost like playing games on the keyboard with running motions, contrary motions, chasing from one side of the keyboard to the other, and hockets topped with ornamentations.

Crossings also relates to crossing of paths, crossing of perceptions and spontaneity of inspirations. This work was commissioned by Malaysian pianist Melody Quah, one of my former students. Here, displays a crossing of paths between teacher and student and how both look forward to inspire and expand new directions in music-making.
