ABOUT THIS EVENT
Italian madrigals of the late 16th century were going through radical reform – compositional styles by masters such as Palestrina was seen as ‘Stile Antico’ or ‘Prima Pratica’, a practice of the past in which the free flowing polyphony of the music was more favorable, at the expense of the expressions of the text. At the heart of it, Monteverdi, in the preface of his madrigal collection, argues for ‘Seconda Pratica’, a monodic style and freedom in dissonance treatment of the music justified by the expressive setting of texts. In this programme, the YST Chamber Singers will explore music by Marenzio, Gesualdo and Monterverdi, of whom their seemingly excessive usage of chromaticism and extreme word painting, exemplifies a style of writing many would consider ahead of their time, and ventures into the depths of love, passion, pain and suffering.
